About Lake Winnebago
Lake Winnebago is the largest inland lake in Wisconsin: 131,942 acres, 29 miles long, with 110 miles of shoreline across Winnebago, Fond du Lac and Calumet counties. Seventeen public landings serve it, spread around the whole shore.
What makes Winnebago unlike anything else in the state is its lake sturgeon. The Winnebago System supports a sturgeon spearing season each February, running up to sixteen days or until harvest caps are reached — a fishery managed on this scale in almost no other place in North America. The 2026 season took 1,540 fish across the system.
The state also classifies Winnebago's musky as self-sustaining via natural reproduction, Category 1, meaning the population needs no stocking. Smallmouth habitat is classified as non-wadable fine substrate, which is an accurate description of a very large, very shallow lake with a soft bottom.
That shallowness matters more than the acreage does. A lake this wide and this shallow builds dangerous water quickly in wind, and local knowledge about when to be off it is worth more than any tackle advice.
Sturgeon spearing has its own licence, its own season and its own rules, entirely separate from the general fishing regulations. Check the current DNR Winnebago System rules before either.
