About Fox River
This is the lower Fox and the upper Fox together — 99 miles running north from the Princeton and Berlin marshes through Omro and Oshkosh, across Lake Winnebago's outlet, and down the locks at Appleton, Kimberly, Kaukauna and Wrightstown to De Pere and Green Bay. The survey puts 6,438 acres of surface and 301 miles of bank on it across six counties.
Thirty-two public landings are on record, and they reflect a river that runs through cities. Bomier Street in De Pere, Fox and Hounds Park, the Berlin Locks accesses, Eureka Dam — these are municipal ramps and lock-side access rather than gravel put-ins.
The state's musky classification here is the notable one: self-sustaining via natural reproduction, Category 1, meaning the DNR considers this population capable of maintaining itself without stocking. Smallmouth habitat is classified across four types including nursery water.
The river is heavily dammed and locked, and conditions change substantially between pools. Check the current DNR regulations for the reach being fished.
